Mike Larson demos his Phoenix Hand during a 'Device Pilot' community meeting.

Mike Larson of Austin, Texas stumbled upon the e-NABLE community in 2019 while searching for 3D printing. Born with congenital hand anomalies on his left hand (ABS), he hadn’t used a device growing up but the power of the e-NABLE movement spoke to him. He made a case with Enable Web Central to try a Phoenix hand

When the device arrived, he began to test it in his daily life. When things began to break, he found improvements. The more he customized the hand through modifications and tinkering, the more he used it. He began to find practical synergies within his activities to support his dominant hand. The device was not a finish line, but a new starting point.

Mike set up a Youtube channel he titled Prosthetic Hand Test Lab to share his observations as device reviews. He began making posts on the Hub, where he found shared interest. Several other experienced volunteers contacted him, and they created a design group to review some of his testing criteria, review available devices, and explore features for a new device. The team holds weekly meetings for about a dozen CAD designers, 3D printing experts, device users, and community leaders with members from the United States, Romania, and Sweden. Check our Mike’s Untethered interview with Jeremy Simon to learn more about their process and project goals, as well their educational collaboration with e-NABLE Chapter Moreau Catholic High School.

Mike Larson throws and catches a ball using his device in his Youtube channel for demoing new devices and materials.

In addition to design, Mike has been an early leader in the monthly Device Pilot’s meetings, a space for those who pilot open source prosthetic devices. His knowledge of materials and customization has helped guide others who are exploring new devices and adapting them to meet their needs. Join Mike and others the third Monday each month!

The e-NABLE Badge for 'Joining the Hub'

New Integrated Badges
e-NABLE Hub

e-NABLE has fully integrated our badge system into the Hub! We use badges for promoting education, establishing chapters, evaluating volunteer skills in making devices, sharing design contributions, celebrating partnerships, and for encouraging important community activities.

Announced on the Hub just before summer, we have approved over 135 new badges since the update.

With updated badge descriptions and criteria,
new categories, redesigned icons, and simplified ‘Maker’ badges (combining fabrication with assembly), we hope it will be easier for everyone. When you request your first badge, each member authorizes Badgr to integrate with their Hub account (only once!) through the pop-up window. Once completed, your badges will show up in your profile. Scrolling over a user's profile now displays their badge achievements, making it very easy to find experienced members. Please explore the collection for yourself!
A huge thank you to mastermind Mazvydas Sverdiolas for his heroic efforts on this project, and for our admin team Jon Schull, Bob Rieger, and Jeremy Simon for their contributions preparing for and piloting the new system.

New Chapter Spotlights
Worldwide

Explore e-NABLE's new Chapter Spotlights across Europe, the Middle East, and South America!

Three university students began Po Paraguay in a grandparent’s garden shed. Ellias, their very first device user, became a design partner, exploring a variety of adapters, including one for the violin which he learned to play. He continues to be involved today, testing several new devices each year.

The majority of Pakistan’s device users are adults who have lost a limb after a workplace accident. The Grit 3D team has developed a process using cosmetic gloves with naturally colored organic-looking hands. Their team includes a professional prosthetist offering rehabilitation counseling for those who can make regular visits.

e-NABLE France offers support across the French diaspora in Europe and Africa. This includes Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Togo, Casamance, Belgium, Switzerland, and others. They have developed a Wordpress database system to map and manage requests while matching volunteers.

Robotel Chapter founder Zeynep Karagöz has participated as a keynote speaker with 4 TEDx talks across Turkey to speak on social technology and entrepreneurship, maker tools, and STEAM education. Check out her recent presentation with e-NABLE Germany!

e-NABLE Internships
With Brandeis University
In the Spring of 2021, the Re-NABLE chapter of Rochester, NY and e-NABLE’s Community Coordination Committee launched an internship in partnership with Brandeis University.

Isabella Kaplan, Spring Intern from Brandeis University

Isabella Kaplan piloted the program, reviewing the e-NABLE network and making recommendations to support our decentralized distributed community. Her research culminated in a Town Hall Meeting presentation entitled ‘Strengthening Coordination in a

Do-ocracy’ (May 14th)

In addition to wonderful consulting work, Isabella drafted two additional internship positions before she moved on to carry on the effort.

Alison Elliott, Fall Intern from Brandeis University  Kevin Dardik, Fall Intern from Brandeis University

We are excited to welcome Alison Elliott & Kevin Dardik to fill those positions. They will be focusing on improving our onboarding process and exploring event opportunities. Look out for them in our upcoming community events.
